First, not having an in-house streaming service need not deprive a studio from reaping strong at-home revenues. Second, and critical for theaters as they recover, is that a long window (for both films, more than two months after their theatrical debut) is no hindrance to reaping the benefits of initial high return PVOD prices. Contrast that with “The Batman” (Warner Bros./$24.99). After two full weeks out on PVOD and on HBO Max (free there for subscribers), along with an HBO cable showing, the biggest 2022 grossing film fell to #3 at Vudu, and #6 at both iTunes and Google Play....

“It was doing incredibly well, and the deal that they’d made with Robin was a high-percentage first-dollar gross — a movie-star deal — and it was great, because instantly by putting Robin in the movie their pre-sales paid for the whole fucking film,” Smith said. “So, the movie was paid for and then the movie was making money hand over fist and made over $100 million. From what I remember, Robin’s split would be even greater and he’d get a bigger percentage if it crossed $100 million, so every dollar the movie made at the theatrical box office would have to be split — I’m not sure if it was a 50/50 split — with Robin Williams....

The first teaser for Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” set to premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and open the 2022 New York Film Festival, marks Driver and Baumbach’s fifth collaboration together. Two-time Oscar nominee Driver stars as college professor Jack Gladney, who has made a name for himself in academia by pioneering the field of Hitler studies. Yet when an “airborne toxic event” takes over his fictional university town, Jack and his wife Babette (Gerwig) are determined to protect their family....

If that’s the case, Legendary Entertainment’s latest outing in the MonsterVerse will almost certainly be hailed as a return to form. Any gross above the $16.7 million earned in the opening weekend for “Wonder Woman 1984” — the best three-day total for any film in the last year — will do the trick. Beyond the headlines, the reality is a little different. “Godzilla vs. Kong” opens March 31, a Wednesday, to take advantage of the Easter weekend....

Dick and Ziering direct the docuseries along with Amy Herdy, who produced “On the Record” and Dick’s Oscar-nominated college campus sex crimes documentary “The Hunting Ground.” “Allen v. Farrow” aims to look at the accusations of sexual abuse against Woody Allen involving his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, his child with ex Mia Farrow. While Allen has never been charged with a crime despite multiple investigations and has denied that he molested Dylan Farrow when she was seven years old, attention to the scandal has persisted over the decades, as have the Farrow family’s claims....

The show’s official synopsis states it’s “an anthology series of stand-alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends, and lore,” but in three episodes (four if you include the two-part pilot as separate entities) it’s unclear what legends, myths, or lore we’re drawing from outside of Murphy’s universe. None of the stories shown so far feel steeped in myths or legends that people would know offhand, or even feel particularly interested to unearth further....

A zombie penis will not appear in “Army of the Dead,” but zombified animals such as a horse and a tiger will be getting screen time. As reported last month, the film’s VFX team created a zombie tiger named Valentine by using a real tiger from the sanctuary owned by the infamous “Tiger King” subject Carole Baskin. Snyder’s VFX team spent a week at Baskin’s sanctuary studying a tiger so that Valentine would act as lifelike as possible in the film....

First things first: This iteration of Dieter is a bit different than the one German actor and director Schweighöfer presented in Snyder’s film. He’s still a natty dresser, a chatty conversationalist, and a damn good safecracker, but “Army of Thieves” picks up just before he turned those skills toward a life of crime. Oh, and his name is actually Sebastian, another twist that Snyder and Shay Hatten’s screenplay happily explains away over its protracted 127-minute running time....

The writing team on “Better Call Saul” had no idea how the final season would be broken up. Yet, even though the people involved couldn’t have planned for certain that this would be the opening, it’s hard to think of a better beginning for the series’ final homestretch. Not only is “Point and Shoot” an impeccable ballet of conflicting aims and means, it sets an effective expectation for the remaining five episodes to come: Don’t expect this to feel good....

Though little is currently known about the show’s plot, it is part of Kosove and Johnson’s larger efforts to expand the “Blade Runner” universe since acquiring the property in 2011. Enter Brendan Walsh’s IFC Midnight thriller “Centigrade,” which adds a (literally) chilling dimension to a genre still pushing its boundaries. The film’s official synopsis plays up the “Blair Witch Project” of it all: “In 2002, a young American couple, Matthew and Naomi travel to the arctic mountains of Norway. After pulling over during a snowstorm, they wake up trapped in their SUV, buried underneath layers of snow and Ice. As if the stakes aren’t high enough, Naomi is eight months pregnant in their frozen prison....

Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur) has had a rough go of things. After the death of his mother, Jake’s father, Lucas (Devon Sawa), spends his days drinking and berating Jake for being gay and a loner. Jake wants to be an artist and his recent sculptures have focused on dolls, so when he spies everyone’s favorite possessed plastic creature at a yard sale, it gives Jake the opportunity to complete his latest piece....

At his best, Smith uses that stoner sensibility for texture, creating an absurdist backdrop for his relatively normal protagonists as they confront challenging problems with no easy answers. At his worst, he gets stoned behind the wheel and churns out inane drivel that appears to be aimed exclusively at 37-year-olds who sleep on a futon in their wife’s boyfriend’s basement. Both versions of Smith show up in “Clerks III,” though fortunately there’s enough of the former to make up for a rough first act dominated by the latter....

The timing of Stone’s signing is highly interesting. “Cruella,” alongside Disney and Marvel’s “Black Widow,” were the first to try out Disney’s simultaneous release structure of both theaters and streaming. Disney did not release how much of the movie’s profits came from streaming in comparison to “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise,” but it’s presumed to have made about $20 million in streaming alone. Because of that release window, there were rumblings that Stone could possibly be preparing to sue Disney in a move similar to actress Scarlett Johansson back in July....
